Chapter 12

Cameron sifted through the drawers and cabinets in William Butler’s kitchen. Other than a bunch of canned and boxed crap, there was nothing. The fridge held a few beers, some rotting leftovers from various take out places and something that he thought might have been an orange in a previous life.

“Asshole was definitely a bachelor.” He shut the cabinet then made his way to the bedroom.

He pushed the door open with a gloved hand and reached for a light switch. It was obviously the master bedroom but judging from the dust and the antique furnishings, it appeared that nobody had used it since his parents deaths. Cam dragged a finger across the top of a dresser and pulled back enough dirt and dust to pot a small plant. “Fuckin’ gross.”

He stepped back into the hallway and made his way down to the next door. He wasn’t surprised at the lack of cleanliness of the bathroom. Rust stains covered the tub and basin. The faucets had decades of crusted hard water around the spigot. He stepped in and glanced at the medicine cabinet. The prescription medications inside were for Butler’s parents and years out of date.

He made his way to the end of the hall and pushed open the door. The décor was fitting for a child. Cowboy lamp, plastic rocket hanging from the ceiling and brown plaid bedspread all screamed that a child still lived here.

He wiped at the top of the dresser and wasn’t shocked that it was almost clean. The drawers held men’s clothes and work boots littered the floor of the closet.

“Is this the Butlers or the Bates? Dude is seriously messed up.”

“Bill said you’d be here.”

Cameron nearly jumped at the voice. “Dammit, Randy…I didn’t hear you.”

“Obviously.” He leaned against the doorjamb and studied him. “Didn’t want to wait until we had a cause of death?”

“The guy gave me the creeps. I told you that.” Cam held a hand to his chest and tried to calm his nerves. “Now I see that my vibe from him wasn’t off.”

Randy shrugged. “So the guy stayed in his old room. Big deal. Maybe he didn’t want to deal with the pain of clearing out the parents room.”

Cam shook his head. “Or maybe he couldn’t bear to be at the scene of his crime.” He saw Randy’s brow hike so he continued. “Both parents died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Then junior moves in, but stays in his old room?”

“Like I said…”

“Come on.” Cameron reached up and flicked at the plastic rocket hanging from the ceiling. “He had to be mid thirties and he still has model space ships hanging from the rafters?” He pointed to the lamp. “A cowboy? Come on man. Tell me this doesn’t scream serial killer.”

Randy snorted and pushed off the doorjamb. “It tells me he probably wasn’t all there in the noodle, but that doesn’t make him a serial killer.”

Cam sighed. “I’m still looking.”

“No, you’re going back to the station. This crap will still be here tomorrow.
